It was another good night with 88 macro moths of 29 species. This included 3 Underwing species in the bait trap and 4 new backyard species for the year that I can confidently identify. The new species were Mottled Quaker (Parastichtis suspecta), Neumogen's Quaker (Oligia egens), Obelisk Dart (Euxoa obeliscoides) and Finland Dart Moth (Actebia fennica). The Obelisk Dart was a little worn but recognisable.

In spite of some rain it was a good night with 115 macro moths of 32 species. This included 3 Semirelict Underwing Moths (Catocala semirelicta) in the bait trap. Unfortunately, there were no new Underwing species but it's good to know that the bait trap is still working as there were no Underwings in my light trap. There were 2 new species for the year, Subflava Sedge Borer Moth (Capsula subflava) and Broad-lined Sallow (Sympistis dinalda). Continuing with yesterdays attempt to put tentive id's to some tricky euxoa species, there was also another euxoa in the light trap which I am calling euxoa auripennis based the lack of streaking of the dark terminal band into the pale subterminal area as can be seen in the image I id'd as e. servita yesterday. Probably a little tenuous, however, after looking through photographs in the "Moths of America North of Mexico", Fascicle 27.2, the terminal band streaking appears to be a valid id criteria. Anyway, my best guess :). I've included a photograph of Bronzed Cutworm (Nephelodes minians) which shows another colour variation. Close to pink!

There were 94 moths of 28 species in the traps last night. Nothing too exiting but I've attempted to put tentative id's two Euxoa species. I'm calling the first Euxoa campestris rather than declarata because of the overall darker wing colouring. The second I'm calling Euxoa servita rather than auripennis because the inner margin of the dark terminal area streaks heavily into the subterminal area with a couple of streaks almost reaching the reniform spot.

A slightly better night in Lethbridge resulted in 40 moths of 14 species, although, 24 of these were Glassy Cutworms (Apamea devastator). There are two noctuids I haven't identified yet but there was one new species that I can confidently identify as Smooth Amphipyra Moth (Amphipyra glabella).

Once again, heavy rain and cool temperatures on Thursday night resulted in no moths. I'm now in Lethbridge for the weekend. Surprisingly, as it was a dry night, there were only 7 moths of three species in the trap last night but this did include one species that I haven't seen before. A new Lymantriidae, Rusty Tussock Moth (Orgyia antiqua). As often happens, the interesting moth was on the outside of the trap so I'm happy that I got to it before it flew off...
